Beijing, May 7 /Xinhua/ — The official representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Xian, stated on Thursday that the root cause of the current serious difficulties in China-Japan relations lies in the erroneous statements made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan.
He called on Japan to recognize and correct its mistakes, creating the necessary conditions for normal exchanges between the two countries.
A Chinese diplomat made corresponding statements at a daily briefing for journalists in response to a question regarding a public statement by Sanae Takaichi six months ago that the emergency situation in Taiwan could represent a “threat to Japan’s existence,” with a hint at possible military intervention.
Speaking about serious difficulties in bilateral relations, Lin Qizhan noted that the responsibility for this entirely lies with the Japanese side. Genuine exchanges and dialogue, according to him, are possible only on the basis of mutual respect and strict adherence to agreements.
Lin Zhi’an indicated that if the Japanese side truly hopes to improve relations with China, it must strictly adhere to the four Sino-Japanese political documents, fulfill its commitments made to China, retract its erroneous statements, and concretely safeguard the political foundation of bilateral relations.
“We call on the Japanese authorities to acknowledge the root cause of the problem, recognize and correct their mistakes, and create conditions necessary for normal exchanges between China and Japan,” summarized the official spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. –0–
