Washington, May 6 /Xinhua/ — U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio stated on Tuesday that the United States will not allow Iran’s control over the Hormuz Strait to become “the norm” after earlier that day both sides exchanged fire in this strategically important waterway for global energy.
“They are trying to make this some kind of new norm,” M. Rubio said at a briefing in the White House. “Under no circumstances can we allow them to normalize a situation where they blow up merchant ships and lay mines in the water.”
“We prefer these straits to be open as they should be open, so that everything returns to its previous state,” M. Rubio added, emphasizing that Iran “cannot be allowed to dictate who can use this vital waterway.”
On February 28, Israel and the United States carried out joint strikes on Tehran and other Iranian cities, resulting in the deaths of Iran’s then-supreme leader Ali Khamenei, high-ranking commanders, and civilians. Iran responded with massive missile and drone strikes on Israeli and US targets in the Middle East and strengthened control over the Strait of Hormuz. –0–
