UN, May 5 /Xin Hua/ — The UN welcomes the unilateral ceasefire announced by Ukraine and Russia. This was stated on Tuesday by the official representative of the UN Secretary-General, Stefan Dujarric, at the daily press briefing.

“We welcome the unilateral ceasefire declared by Ukraine on the night of May 5 to 6, as well as the ceasefire by the Russian Federation from May 8 to 9,” noted S. Duzharrik.

“The Secretary-General hopes for a successful implementation and confirms his appeal for a complete, immediate, unconditional, and long-term cessation of hostilities, leading to a just, comprehensive, and sustainable peace in accordance with the UN Charter, international law, and relevant UN resolutions,” said the official representative.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Monday a ceasefire in connection with Victory Day on May 8-9. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday evening that Ukraine will begin a ceasefire with Russia starting Wednesday.
