Beijing, May 6 /Xin Hua/ — During the five-day national holiday for International Labor Day /May 1/, which lasted from May 1 to May 5, a record number of interregional passenger trips were recorded in China. The Ministry of Transport of the PRC reported this on Wednesday.

The total volume of interregional passenger trips in China for the specified period reached 1.52 billion person-trips, which is 3.49% more compared to the same period last year.

The largest share of trips was made by automobile transport: its number amounted to 1.39 billion person-trips, which is 3.51 percent more than the annual comparison.

The number of passenger trips by rail transport amounted to 106.38 million person-trips, an increase of 4.6%, by water transport — 8.49 million person-trips, a decrease of 1.37%, by air transport — 10.54 million person-trips, a decrease of 5.74%.

The boom in travel in China during the May Day holidays is due to increased tourist and leisure activity, as well as frequent visits to relatives.
