Washington, May 4 /Xin Hua/ — An armed man opened fire near the White House in Washington on Monday and was shot dead after a clash with law enforcement officers. This was reported by the US Secret Service.

The shooting occurred during the day, near 15th Street and Independence Avenue by the Washington Monument, where U.S. President Donald Trump was holding an event for small businesses.

Officers returned fire and shot the suspect, said Deputy Director of the Secret Service Matthew Quinn, adding that one officer was wounded but his life is out of danger.

“The motorcade of U.S. Vice President Joe DiVance passed through this area shortly before the shooting, but nothing indicates that he was the target,” said M. Quinn.

After the incident, the White House was closed for a short time, but D. Trump, as reported, continued the event.

The capital police department stated that it is investigating the scene of the incident, adding that the area was cordoned off.

Authorities urged citizens to avoid this area, as it is expected that the road closures will last for several hours. –0–
