Bishkek, May 3 /Xin Hua/ — China, as a founding state of the SCO, plays an important systemic role, consistently promoting initiatives aimed at strengthening multilateral cooperation, developing transport connectivity, trade and economic ties, and the digital economy. This was stated on Saturday in an exclusive interview by SCO Deputy Secretary-General Oleg Kopylov.
O. Kopylov noted that the Chinese presidency was quite successful, and the summit in Tianjin last September became the largest in the history of the SCO. Various strategies and initiatives proposed by China have been organically integrated into the work of the SCO.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the SCO. O. Kopylov reported to Xinhua that significant progress has been achieved over 25 years of development. Today, the SCO is the largest transregional organization in the world, and its agenda has significantly expanded and now covers almost all areas of cooperation.
“This clearly demonstrates the scale of the Organization’s activity expansion, and it will only continue to grow in the future. The plans remain broad and ambitious,” he said.
On May 2, in the city of Cholpon-Ata, Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan, another International Issyk-Kul Marathon Run the Silk Road — SCO 2026 was held under the auspices of the SCO.
“Marathon is not only sport, but also culture and connections between people. We strive for our organization to be not just a venue for meetings of officials, but to have a ‘human face,'” noted the deputy secretary-general of the SCO.
He believes that the international SCO marathon, implemented with the active participation of China and Kyrgyzstan, has over the years become a sustainable humanitarian project that combines sports, cultural, and unifying components and practically demonstrates the values of the “Shan Spirit.”
The 26th meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO will be held in Kyrgyzstan in the second half of this year. O. Kopylov expressed hope that the summit will result in specific agreements on further deepening cooperation in the field of security, including joint counteraction to terrorism, separatism, and extremism, transnational crime and drug trafficking, as well as strengthening mechanisms for prompt response to modern challenges and threats.
“A whole series of documents is currently being prepared for the heads of governments and states, including declarations and plans. They have a serious and substantive nature. We are also actively working on improving the efficiency of the organization’s activities — this is one of the key directions,” he added.
