At the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, an interactive lecture on financial literacy was held for first-year undergraduate engineering students. The event was organized as part of a joint initiative of the Prosecutor’s Office of St. Petersburg and the North-West Main Directorate of the Bank of Russia. The invited speaker before the freshmen was Roman Sagirov, a leading expert of the Financial Literacy Department of the North-West Main Directorate of the Bank of Russia. He not only explained the basic principles of personal finance management, but also focused on the most in-demand topic among young people — how to resist financial fraudsters in the digital environment.

Facing scammers, it is important not only to know the rules of safe behavior but also to develop a habit and apply it — this will help protect yourself and your loved ones. If you want to delve deeper into cybersecurity and other important aspects of financial literacy (savings, investments, launching your own business), join the free training and marathons onplatform of the Bank of Russiafor students,” said Roman Sagirov.

The lecture was conducted in the format of a live dialogue. Roman Sagirov thoroughly analyzed various types of fraud schemes that students might encounter today: from classic calls from the “bank security service” to various methods of involving young people in illegal schemes, including drop-storing (cashing out stolen funds) and phishing attacks in messengers and social networks. The speaker paid special attention to specific algorithms for countering cybercriminals: how to verify information for accuracy, what data should never be disclosed under any circumstances, and what responsibility a person bears, even an involuntary participant in a fraudulent scheme.

The lecture format proved to be maximally effective. Students actively participated in the discussion of the topic: they asked the speaker clarifying questions, shared personal experiences of encounters with fraudsters and suspicious offers. The lively dialogue allowed freshmen not just to learn the theory, but to study real cases of countering fraudulent schemes. It was very useful and not at all boring. I hadn’t thought before how easy it is to fall for the fraudsters’ lure through messengers, but now I know clear safety rules,” shared one of the lecture participants’ impressions.

PolitE thanks Roman Sagirov for the substantive event, as well as partners from the Prosecutor’s Office of Saint Petersburg and the SZGU Bank of Russia for fruitful cooperation in the matter of legal education and improving the financial literacy of youth.

Vice-Rector for Educational Activities Lyudmila Vladimirovna Pankova emphasized: For us at Politeh, it is important that students not only receive quality engineering education, but also feel confident in everyday life. Financial literacy is not just a useful skill, but an element of personal security for a young person. Lectures like those by experts from the Bank of Russia are useful for students because they help protect our freshmen from real threats: fraud in the digital environment, involvement in illegal schemes such as drop servicing, loss of funds due to ignorance of basic rules.Such lectures are part of our systematic care for the student, and for their well-being and peaceful future.
