Nanjing, April 26 /Xinhua/ — On Sunday, China delivered to the customer the largest independently designed and built liquefied natural gas (LNG) transportation vessel to date, marking a breakthrough in the country’s capability to build large ships for transporting clean energy.
As reported by the shipbuilding company, the vessel “Celsius Georgetown” set off for Singapore after being handed over to the customer at 10:50 a.m. in the dock of China Merchants Heavy Industry /Jiangsu/ Co., Ltd.
A ship 298.8 meters long and 48 meters wide is designed to carry 180 thousand cubic meters of LNG. It is equipped with a dual low-speed fuel engine system.
Border control officers boarded the vessel in advance to expedite the processing procedures, which helped ensure the timely and safe departure of the vessel due to favorable tidal conditions.
Lu Zhinlun, program manager of the large SPG ship company China Merchants Heavy Industry /Jiangsu/ Co., Ltd., reported that the company received orders for the construction of six similar ships. He added that the remaining five are currently at the construction stage, and the second ship is expected to be delivered to the customer within three months.
LNG vessels are designed for transporting natural gas in liquid form at a temperature of minus 163 degrees Celsius. Thanks to their technological complexity, they have earned the nickname “pearl” of the shipbuilding industry, in which for a long time a small number of global shipbuilding companies dominated.
