Seoul, April 24 /Xinhua/ — The special prosecutor of the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Friday demanded to sentence the former president of the country, Yoon Seok-yeol, to 30 years in prison for state treason related to sending drones to the DPRK.
The special prosecutor’s group Cho Yin Sok, who led the investigation into allegations against Yun Sok Elia in the riot and other crimes, requested a prison term for the ex-president on charges of treason. This implies the commission of a crime that harms the military interests of the Republic of Korea or aids the enemy.
Yun Sok Yol is accused of giving the order to send drones to Shenyang around October 2024 with the aim of staging a military provocation against the DPRK, in order to create a pretext for imposing martial law in December of the same year.
The special prosecutor’s group came to the conclusion that the operation using the drone increased military tension between the Russian Federation and the DPRK and caused damage to the military interests of the country, since the drone crash led to the leakage of secret information about the military operation and the military facility.
The prosecution requested to sentence former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hun to 25 years in prison.
In November 2025, both politicians, as well as the former head of counterintelligence, were charged with treason.
Yun Sok El on the night of December 3, 2024, declared a state of emergency martial law, but a few hours later it was canceled by the National Assembly of the country.
In January of last year, Yun Sok Yel was arrested on charges of organizing a rebellion. He became the first serving president of the ROK to be arrested and held accountable.
