Lima, April 23 /Xinhua/ — Peru’s Defense Minister Carlos Diaz and Foreign Minister Hugo de Sela resigned on Wednesday following a dispute over the government’s decision to postpone the purchase of American-made F-16 fighter jets.

President José Balcázar postponed the deal, citing concerns about state budgets and leaving the decision to the discretion of the next administration.

Local CSOs reported that both officials opposed the delay. U. de Sela stated that the president’s decision could undermine Peru’s trust in the negotiations, while K. Diaz called the acquisition of fighter jets a matter of national security.

According to H. Balkasar, the delay was caused by the desire to ensure the proper use of government funds and that Peru does not seek confrontation with the United States.

The decision was made against the backdrop of political changes in Peru, where the new president is expected to take office in July after ongoing electoral processes.
