April 20 is celebrated in Russia as National Donor Day – a holiday for those who share a part of themselves to save the lives of others. It is a tribute to those who donate blood voluntarily and without compensation, and a call for everyone to reflect: could I become a donor?
History of the holiday
The date is not chosen by chance. On April 20, 1832, in Saint Petersburg, obstetrician Andrey Wolf for the first time in the history of Russian medicine successfully transfused blood to a parturient woman, thereby saving her life. This event became the starting point for the development of donation in the country.
The official holiday was established in 2007 at the “round table” on the issues of donation and blood services, held at the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
Why giving blood is important
One donation can save up to three people. Blood is needed constantly: for performing complex surgeries, treating oncological diseases, helping victims of traffic accidents and burns, as well as in difficult childbirth cases.
There is no complete artificial alternative capable of fully replacing the functions of human blood. Every liter of blood is a gift from a compassionate person.
Every year in Russia, about 1.5–1.8 million people donate blood. To meet the needs of medicine, it is necessary that there be 40 donors per 1,000 residents; however, the current figure is about 14 per 1,000. This means that to fully cover the need for donor blood, the number of donors must be increased almost 3 times.
Donation to GOO
The State University of Management has been regularly participating in donor campaigns since 2013. At SUM, they believe: a true manager is not only an effective organizer but also a person who feels responsibility for others.
At least twice a year, medical teams and from 50 to 200 students, teachers, and staff come to the university to donate blood or its components right on the premises of their alma mater. A special memo for donors has been developed to maximize the benefits of the procedure.
