Washington, April 15 /Xinhua/ — The Pentagon will send thousands of military personnel to the Middle East in the coming days, while Washington and Tehran are trying to resume negotiations and reach an agreement on the cessation of hostilities between the US and Israel against Iran. Local media reported this on Wednesday.
As reported by The Washington Post newspaper with reference to American officials, the administration of US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of delivering additional strikes or conducting ground operations in the event that the fragile ceasefire does not hold.
About 6,000 military personnel are among the forces being redeployed to the region aboard the “George Bush” aircraft carrier of the “Nimitz” class and its accompanying warships. According to a press release from the US Navy, they left the Norfolk naval base in the state of Virginia at the end of March and headed to the Middle East.
About 4,200 servicemen from the Boxer amphibious ships group and the attached 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit are expected to arrive in the region by the end of the month.
At the moment, about 50,000 American military personnel are involved in the US campaign against Iran, which began on February 28.
D. Trump said in an interview on the Fox Business channel on Wednesday that the war with Iran is “very close to ending.”
