Student of the Engineering Academy of RUDN, Georgiy Kusarev, presented his project at one of the most prestigious platforms in the country in the field of ecology and social responsibility — the “ESG Projects 2025” award.

He spoke at a large-scale pitch session of the Entrepreneurship Center of the Graduate School of Management of SPbGU and presented a report on the topic “Niche communities by interests as a tool of intercultural communication of students: the experience of the RUDN fishing club,” in which he highlighted the potential of the student association in the context of the modern ESG agenda (environmental, social, and corporate governance).

Participation in an event of this level allowed not only to announce the student initiative RUDN at the federal level, but also to receive direct feedback from business practitioners. As a result of the presentation, Georgiy held a series of consultations with leading entrepreneurs and colleagues in project activities, receiving practical advice and ideas for the further development and scaling of the club.

About the history of the project

Georgiy has been engaged in sport fishing since early childhood. As he recounted, his fishing story began when he was two years old — that is precisely when, according to his parents, he went fishing with them for the first time. Fishing became his passion and activity that never gets boring: every summer he spent a lot of time by the river, enjoying the quiet and tranquility.

“At the age of 14, having accidentally seen news about a fishing competition, I convinced my mother to let me go there as a gift for excellent studies. I caught nothing then, but my eyes shone even brighter. That was exactly when my sports career began. Every year for eight years I attended from 9 to 13 competitions per season, and over those years I became the winner and prize-winner of more than 10 city and regional tournaments, and also achieved the second sports category,” —Georgiy Kulariev.

The student dispels the stereotype that fishing is a boring process: according to him, during one session more than 100 rod casts are made, the brain is constantly working to find the right tactic for a specific body of water, and carrying equipment weighing about 50–60 kilograms.

A student founded a university fishing club on March 8, 2023, with the support of the Primary Trade Union Organization of RUDN. Over three years, the community has transformed from a small group into a large project. Now, the club includes more than 200 students and teachers.

“By creating the club, I wanted to involve as many students as possible in a beloved activity, as at that time this type of sport was not popular among young people. Our work system is simple: the main rule is ‘Fishing is accessible to everyone.’ The club goes out to the water every weekend of the season and also holds four fishing tournaments annually across three disciplines, inviting students and teachers from various universities in Russia — usually more than five universities participate. Two years ago, the official fishing team of RUDN was established. During its existence, the athletes have won five medals at tournaments, both in individual and team events.”The most prestigious victories were the team win at the tandem tournament “Podmoskovny Bereg”, as well as the victory and prize-winning at the Moscow Government competitions. At one of these contests, the national team members gave exclusive interviews to federal TV channels,” —Georgiy Kusarev.

Presentation of experience

For the first time, the topic “Niche Communities by Interests as a Tool of Intercultural Communication among Students: Experience of the RUDN Fishing Club” was presented by Georgiy at the All-Russian conference “Advertising, PR, and Marketing in Intercultural Communication” at the Perm National Research Polytechnic University. The project took second place at that time.

In the report, the student covered the topic of “soft power” and common affairs for easy communication and adaptation of foreign students. Georgiy is convinced that fishing is a place where the boundaries between people are erased, and everyone becomes one whole with nature. His personal thesis:“If you want to get to know a person better, go fishing, their brain will tell you everything itself.”.

At the award“ESG Projects 2025”Georgy presented a union that fully reveals the ESG agenda. After all, his project brings together people from different fields, countries, and cities, and also promotes careful treatment of fish — most fishermen participants practice the principle “catch and release,” thereby preserving the bioresource. In the presentation, he put forward ideas of scaling through the media, cooperation with a large number of universities, and the development of new fishing directions. Monetization was also discussed, but the project remains socially student-oriented: it operates on the personal funds of athletes and with the support of the Primary Trade Union Organization RUDN.

Especially valuable for Georgia was the experts’ council, which proposed creating competitions in the format of “Family Fishing,” inviting not only students and teachers but also their relatives. Such an idea, in the opinion of the prize organizers, would contribute to strengthening family communications and supporting family-oriented events. There were also proposals to perform at a larger number of conferences and award ceremonies to expand the project’s audience.

“My project is still young, and ahead lies a multitude of tournaments, victories, trips, and performances. I am confident that the club will establish itself as a major project, a strong team, and a place where everyone can find peace and new acquaintances,” —Georgiy Kulariev.
