Moscow, April 14 /Xin Hua/ — China has become a key partner of the first specialized laboratory in Russia and the world for the development and study of materials based on palladium, created by the Russian mining and metallurgical company “Norilsk Nickel” /”Nornickel”/. This was reported by the company’s Vice President for Innovations Vitaliy Busko during the official opening of the laboratory in the “Lomonosov” cluster in Moscow.
“Chinese companies are a key link for our laboratory in terms of pilot-industrial testing and applying our solutions based on palladium,” he noted.
As explained by V. Busko, the palladium laboratory is one of the key projects of the Palladium Technology Center (PTC) of Norilsk Nickel, aimed at developing the global palladium market and creating new demand points for this metal.
“This is the first laboratory focused specifically on the study of palladium. The laboratory is equipped with all the necessary equipment for synthesizing various materials, starting from alloys, catalysts, and ending with functional materials,” said the company representative, adding that samples of new palladium materials developed in the laboratory have already undergone testing at a Chinese enterprise.
Director of CPT Dmitry Izotov cited as an example a project for an alloy based on palladium for the fiberglass industry. The new material is 30% lighter than previously used in the industry. “Last year, a Chinese business purchased 0.5 tons of palladium for testing and implementation of the first stages of this technology,” he reported, noting that Chinese companies are also testing Russian technologies based on palladium in solar energy and electronics.
In my opinion, D. Izotov, overall this is a very beneficial cooperation for both parties. “We bring materials to the Chinese business that work better than what they already have. Accordingly, they receive additional economic effects from this for their projects. Chinese manufacturers also get the opportunity to produce new materials at their own capacities, we get new demand for metals. So this is a win-win model for everyone,” he explained.
The CPT portfolio includes about 30 projects at various stages of development for different industrial sectors. The goal of “Norilsk Nickel,” which is the largest palladium producer in the world, is to create 100 materials for 100 industries, which, according to the company’s calculations, should ensure demand for metal in the amount of 50 tons per year.
“By and large, the Chinese market for us is one of the main sources of demand and use of our technologies,” concluded V. Busko. –0–
