Saint Petersburg, April 12 /Sina/ — Events dedicated to Cosmonautics Day and the 65th anniversary of the flight around the Earth by the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin were held on Sunday in Saint Petersburg.

On this day, exhibitions, contests, lectures, and concerts took place in the city. At the V. P. Glushko Museum of Cosmonautics and Rocket Engineering on the territory of the Petropavlovsk Fortress, the exhibition “Innovation Day” was opened — a joint project of the museum and the A. F. Mozhaysky Military Space Academy. Lectures were organized for visitors, and children were able to participate in a master class.

In the historical park “Russia — My History,” the exhibition “Constellation of Cosmonauts” continues until April 19, which tells about the conqueror of space. And in the Moscow district of the city, they launched hundreds of miniature flying devices. The models were created by schoolchildren and students. Light paper rockets flew dozens of meters above the ground.

Governor of Saint Petersburg Alexander Beglov congratulated the citizens on the holiday. “65 years ago, the Soviet Union opened to humanity the era of manned spaceflight. The whole world was amazed by the courage of Yuri Gagarin — the first person to have been in space, who boldly stepped into the future,” emphasized A. Beglov.

According to him, the city on the Neva was at the origins of the space age: research conducted in Leningrad opened the way to the creation of rocket engines and the first flights into space. Today, many scientific organizations and enterprises in St. Petersburg are flagships of Russia’s space industry. “Petersburg remains the most important center for the development of the latest technology and the training of specialists,” the governor noted.
