Panama, April 13 /Sin Hua/ — About 30 people died on Saturday during a mass gathering of people in the historic citadel of La Ferrière in northern Haiti, local media reported on Sunday.

Thousands of people gathered at a youth event in a fortress near the town of Cap-Haïtien, which ended in panic and a stampede, reports the Haitian Times newspaper.

According to the deputy mayor of Cap-Aïtien, Patrick Almonord, the total number of victims may change.

The victims were taken to nearby hospitals.

According to authorities, the event was promoted by several bloggers and gathered a crowd far exceeding the capacity of the citadel.

Photographs circulated on social networks, as well as eyewitness accounts, indicate that only one lane was open for entry and exit, which led to the formation of serious traffic jams due to the increased number of people.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the event organizers received official permission from the Institute for the Protection of National Heritage, which manages the site.
