Ukraine: new series of attacks
UN humanitarian structures report that a series of intensive attacks on the territory of Ukraine in recent weeks have resulted in the deaths of 42 people, including one child. About 200 civilians were injured, including more than a dozen children. According to authorities, the strikes also damaged healthcare, education, and energy facilities, causing power outages in several regions. Humanitarian organizations note that since the beginning of the year, more than 25,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in the Donetsk region. UN partners continue to support evacuation organized by the government.
Consequences of the escalation in the Middle East
The escalation in the Middle East is having an increasinghumanitarian and economic impactaround the world, warns the UN. On Monday during morning trading in Asia, the price of Brent crude oil rose to nearly 110 dollars per barrel. The crisis also affects humanitarian activities: the rise in fuel and transport prices increases the cost of providing assistance. The World Food Programme (WFP) has stated that the Middle Eastern crisis has significantly disrupted global food supply chains. According to WFP forecasts, if the crisis prolongs, up to 45 million people worldwide could be on the brink of hunger.
Regional consultations on Sudan
The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, held a meeting in Nairobi with the commander of the Sudan Rapid Support Forces, General Mohamed Hamdan Hemedti. The diplomat’s visit to the capital of Kenya followed his recent negotiations with the Chairman of the Sudan Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and meetings with government representatives in Khartoum. All parties with whom Haavisto met during his trip expressed their readiness to cooperate with the United Nations and its envoy. In the past, Haavisto also visited Cairo, where he held talks with Egyptian officials, representatives of the League of Arab States, and members of the Sudanese diaspora.
“OON-80”
Reform of the United Nations Organization system within the framework of the “UN-80” initiative has moved to a new stage – from “diagnosing” problems to practical changes. This was stated by the Chairwoman of the General Assembly Annalena Baerbock, speaking at an informal meeting of the General Assembly in New York on Monday. According to her, an important step was the adoption last week of a key resolution on the creation, implementation, and review of mandates. In more than 80 years of the UN’s existence, over 40,000 mandates have been created, some of which have become outdated, duplicated, or unused. Burbok also reminded that in the near future it is planned to appoint two co-chairs of the Special Working Group on the review.
