Harbin, April 9 /Xinhua/ — A successful field trial of a demonstration and applied project for unmanned driving on a cross-border highway took place in Heilongjiang Province /Northeast China/. The project implemented in the city of Heihe provides a powerful technological impetus to simplify trade between China and Russia.
The city of Heihe, located on the opposite bank from the Russian city of Blagoveshchensk, is an important hub of Chinese-Russian economic and trade cooperation, as well as a key center of China’s openness in the northern direction. Winters here are harsh and prolonged. Traditional cross-border logistics face problems such as high operating costs and serious pressure in the security provision sector.
To improve the efficiency of customs clearance at the border checkpoint, Heilongjiang Communications Investment Group Co., Ltd., relying on the advantages of a local test site for autonomous driving in the Suolodny District, focused efforts on four key areas: adaptation to extremely low temperatures, simplification of cross-border passage, intelligent freight transportation management, and dispatching based on artificial intelligence (AI). As a result, a demonstration scenario for unmanned freight transport was created.
Since the launch of the project, the respective divisions, in strict accordance with state standards, have carried out a systematic verification of all scenarios. Tests were conducted on four domestically produced driverless tractor units for interchangeable semi-trailers in various operating modes, covering typical scenarios such as open roads, toll booths, checkpoints, and challenging icy and snowy road sections. During the pilot operation, the total mileage of the vehicles exceeded 25 thousand.km, more than 250 cross-border cargo flights have been completed, tests in extreme winter and summer conditions have been successfully passed, full capabilities for testing and operating unmanned cargo transportation in Arctic regions have been formed.
The basis of the project is artificial intelligence technology. An independently developed intelligent platform for unmanned freight transportation combines technologies such as AI-based dispatching and big data analysis, providing intelligent coordination of cross-border freight tasks, real-time monitoring of vehicle conditions, in-depth analysis of operational data, and fully automated dispatch management without human intervention.
Currently, such project indicators as the accuracy of perception by artificial intelligence, adaptation to weather conditions in the cold region, the effectiveness of cross-border throughput and the level of security control correspond to the acceptance requirements. After strict evaluation by the expert group, the project successfully passed field acceptance. After commissioning, it will significantly increase the freight throughput capacity of the CPP Hays.
