The UN Security Council met today to discuss the issues of the UN’s partnership with one of the regional alliances – the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf. Taking into account the situation in the Middle East, at the meeting, opened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain, the president in April of the Security Council, the discussion primarily focused on security.
Threat to the region
“The Middle East is standing on a dangerous edge,” said Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region, in his speech.
He reminded that the UN Secretary-General condemned the military strikes on Iran, as well as Iran’s attacks on the Gulf countries and Jordan. “These actions are clear violations of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the affected countries,” he emphasized.
The UN representative also referred to the demand set out in Resolution 2817 (2026) on the immediate cessation of all Iranian attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. “The Council condemned these attacks, and they must be stopped immediately,” he said, adding that the Council’s cooperation with the Persian Gulf countries plays a “key role” in reducing tensions in the region.
Attacks on energy and civil infrastructure “cause particular concern,” continued the Assistant to the Secretary-General, while the disruption of shipping in the Persian Gulf and adjacent waters has led to global economic consequences.
“All parties must respect the freedom of navigation, which is a cornerstone of international maritime law,” he said, reminding that the Secretary-General appointed Jean Arnaud as his personal envoy on issues related to the Middle East crisis and its consequences. “The United Nations remains committed to deepening partnership with the countries of the Persian Gulf,” he added.
“Gulf countries aspire to peace”
“Since February 28, the states of the Gulf have been subjected to Iranian attacks using ballistic missiles and combat drones,” emphasized Jasim Albudeibi, Secretary General of the Cooperation Council for the States of the Persian Gulf.
He noted that the strikes targeted critical civilian infrastructure, including airports, oil facilities, residential and commercial areas, fuel depots, service facilities, and diplomatic missions. According to the speaker, these attacks caused casualties among civilians and military personnel, significant material damage, and threaten the safety of local residents.
He also noted that the member countries of the Council strongly condemn “Iranian attacks, which constitute a blatant violation of state sovereignty,” as well as the principle of good neighborly relations, international law, and the UN Charter.
“The countries of the Persian Gulf are not striving for war. They strive for peace, security, and stability, which all peoples deserve,” he emphasized, adding that the best way to overcome the crisis lies through dialogue and diplomacy.
