Tripoli, April 7 /Sina/ — The Supreme State Council (SSC) of Libya on Monday, following the results of an official vote, rejected the proposal of the senior advisor to the US president for African and Arab affairs, Massad Bulos, regarding the division of power between the Government of National Accord, based in Tripoli, and the eastern factions.
In a statement published on Facebook, the Supreme Court emphasized that any political or economic deal concluded outside the framework of the 2015 Libyan Political Agreement is considered invalid.
Member of the House of Representatives Amina al-Maddjoub told the news portal Fawasel that the council “decisively rejected” the initiative of M. Bulous, who proposed to form a small government representing both eastern and western Libya.
According to local media, the US plan assumed that Saddam Haftar — the son of the commander of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar’s base in Tobruk — would take the position of head of the Presidential Council and de facto commander-in-chief of the Libyan army, while the head of the Government of National Accord Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah would simultaneously become prime minister and defense minister.
The proposal was aimed at uniting the rival political forces of eastern and western Libya without full-fledged elections or an official institutional consensus.
After the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, Libya became divided between the UN-recognized Government of National Accord in Tripoli and eastern authorities supported by the Libyan National Army. At the end of last year, the High National Election Commission of Libya announced that presidential elections were scheduled for April 2026. –0–
