A key event of this spring took place at the Polytechnic University — the Youth Career Forum. At the event, students were able to lay the foundation for a professional path not only from their alma mater. An excellent opportunity opened up for students to find internships, communicate with employers, undergo interviews, and receive advice from experts.
“For Politeka, the Youth Career Forum is a direct dialogue between students and leading employers from various regions of the country. We replace impersonal online feedback with live communication. Today, MKF is a strong brand that attracts not only Politeka students but also young people from other universities. The result speaks for itself — more than 50 leading companies: VK, SBE, “Rosatom”, Yandex, BIOCAD, and others. Lectures, master classes, consultations with HR help to understand the real demands of the industry and make a confident step from theory to practice, consciously building a career track for the benefit of the country’s economy.”— noted the Vice-Rector for Educational Activities of SPbPU Lyudmila Pankova.
With a welcoming speech at the opening of the Youth Career Forum, the Vice-Rector for Information, Youth Policy, and Security of SPbPU Maksim Pasholikov spoke:“This event has been held with us for more than 20 years. A large number of our guys have built their careers here over these decades. We all study and work with you at the country’s leading technical university. Therefore, it is a confirmation of your competence, your skills that you can easily apply in the real economic sector. We want to thank all the partners who are here today and have been supporting our students over many years. All this clearly shows how in demand you are today with employers.”
At the stand session, 45 leading Russian and international companies presented themselves. In addition to the partners’ stands, students could participate in business activities in two areas: skills and career. The guys were taught how to properly present themselves, how to pass an interview, and how to build a successful career track.
The company Young&&Yandex held CareerTalks “Turning Points: How to Build a Career in IT.” A Yandex graduate (the name given to Yandex employees) talked about his journey and work at the company. Students there could also listen to an HR lecture and figure out how to properly choose their career path.
“We are looking for IT specialists, and we also have internships in areas not related to IT. Our main goal is to get acquainted with the guys, tell them about our company, and recruit an audience. Young&Yandex is the team within Yandex that deals specifically with internships in various services. Yes, internships throughout Yandex. Politechnical University is one of the central universities from which we hire interns in various directions. That’s why we come here every year.”— representatives of the company said.
The head of the SMM and PR direction in the HR brand (“Sovcombank”) Nastasya Kralina organized a master class “From a student of PhysMe to the head of the communications direction: a non-standard approach to technical knowledge.” This was especially relevant for those who want to change their field of activity but are not confident in their abilities. Participants discussed such a non-standard career trajectory. They answered the question: “How to radically change the field but at the same time get the maximum benefit from what you have already studied?”
Senior manager of PJSC Severstal Islam Shishabekov told students about the main mistake and the lesson he learned when he became the youngest leader in the company.
Project Support Manager of Severstal, Valery Barabantsev, noted that this year the company has a record number of applicants wishing to join the company for internships and practical training:“Everyone is very interested, everyone is ambitious, they show initiative. Mainly, from the third year, but also there are freshmen who are already motivated, ready to come to work for us. We accept applications with resumes, plus we have a career website ‘Severstal — for the young’, where everything about internships and practical training is posted.”
NTC “Protey” conducted the game “CSI: Code With A Conscience,” where participants transformed into unique detectives. They were tasked with conducting an investigation and finding the culprit responsible for an error in the function code. This game was very useful for those attracted to a career in development. Companies offer similar cases during real interviews to assess attentiveness and the ability to work with others’ code.
The Head of the Personnel Training Center of the Scientific Research Institute “Vector”, Alexander Tarakanov, noted:“Our organization regularly participates in various career guidance events. We attend such forums every year, accept students for internships, including pre-graduation internships. Many are employed at the enterprise even during their studies, and many graduates of the Polytechnic University work with us permanently. Some of them hold managerial positions. In recent years, the company has been developing rapidly; now our knowledge and competencies are in demand in the country.”
“TEK SPb” participated in the MKF for the first time.
“We are a resource-supplying organization, providing the city with heat and hot water. Here we select worthy candidates and offer them jobs. Politech is one of the leading universities in Saint Petersburg, so truly worthy guys should come to us.”— emphasized the lead engineer of the operational remote control department of electrical protection Anna Nelidina.
In addition, at the forum for participation in the educational project, career events, and support for talented youth, they were awarded letters of gratitude and commemorative gifts from LLC “VK”, JSC “Petersburg Tractor Plant”, JSC “Severstal Management”.
The head of the department for interaction with higher educational institutions of the “Petersburg Tractor Plant”, Natalya Borisova, emphasized the importance of participation in the ISC:“We always participate in career events because Politec can truly meet all our needs with its capabilities. Our needs are, naturally, in engineering and design specialties, technology, and electrical engineering. It is very pleasant that this forum at Politec University is open to all students from various universities. Here we find talents who really want to undertake internships, test themselves in a real work environment. We encourage students who combine study and work, because the connection of science, university, and practical activity gives full-fledged, good competencies.”
All partner companies at their booths not only talked about career-building opportunities but also conducted various interactive activities where each participant received a guaranteed prize.
