Main news of the day at the UN and worldwide:ÂThe UN chief called to stop the war in the Middle East, experts from the Conference on Trade and Development warn about a slowdown in the global economy, the humanitarian situation in the DR Congo continues to worsen amid violence, the UN urges to provide necessary support to people with autism.

Middle East

The world is on the brink of a major war that could engulf the entire region and lead to catastrophic consequences on a global scale. This was stated on Thursday by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, speaking to journalists at the Organization’s headquarters in New York. He reported that he maintains close contact with all parties and has sent his personal envoy Jean Arnault to the region to assist diplomatic efforts. The Secretary-General once again called on the United States and Israel to stop the war, and Iran to cease attacks on neighboring countries.

Global economy

The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz has provoked a deep crisis that could gradually affect the entire global economy. This is stated by experts from the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The crisis has led to a catastrophic reduction in maritime transportation through the strait — by 95 percent. Against the backdrop of geopolitical instability, the growth rates of global trade in goods in 2026 could slow down threefold, experts warn — to 1.5 percent. It is expected that global GDP growth will decrease from 2.9 percent to 2.6 percent.

The situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo

UN humanitarian agencies warn that the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to worsen due to ongoing violence in the eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. Just in Ituri, in the Mambasa region, at least 30 people were killed yesterday as a result of armed attacks. The total number of civilians killed there since March 11 has exceeded 100 people. During this same period, more than 390 civilians have been displaced. The UN also reports mass looting of medical facilities, including the theft of food products, medicines, and medical supplies.

Autism is not a sentence

According to the World Health Organization, every 127th person in the world suffers from autism spectrum disorders. People with autism experience difficulties in everyday communication, may show intense interest in specific topics, and analyze information in non-standard ways. On World Autism Awareness Day, observed on April 2, the UN reminds that with necessary support, goodwill, and consideration of the needs of people suffering from this neurological disorder, they can productively participate in the life of society.
