Speaking during the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, recalled the goals proclaimed in the Charter of the Organization: to spare future generations the scourge of war, protect human rights, and maintain international peace and security. According to him, more than eight decades later, these promises have still not been fully realized, and numerous conflicts demonstrate how urgently the world needs an effective United Nations.

Erdogan acknowledged that people in crisis-stricken countries are increasingly losing faith in the UN’s ability to achieve peace. At the same time, he emphasized the need to restore trust in the international system and supported the reform efforts of the Secretary-General, including the “UN-80” initiative. The President of Turkey once again called for reforming the Security Council, stating that a system in which the will of 193 states depends on five permanent members of the Council cannot be trusted.

According to Erdogan, in conditions where international mechanisms do not allow resolving crises, regional initiatives, cooperation, and open diplomacy should play a major role. As an example, he cited the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which, he said, contributed not only to regional but also to global security. Turkey, the president added, intends to continue promoting peaceful conflict resolution and the development of regional solutions.
Speaking about the war between Russia and Ukraine, Erdogan expressed hope that it would end with the preservation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He stated that Turkey continues contacts with the parties, aiming to restore maritime security in the Black Sea, ensure food security, and prevent the spread of the war to other countries in the region. Recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea, “regardless of who carries them out,” were called “unacceptable” by the President of Turkey.
