In the largest city of Australia, a series of commemorative screenings dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the director, screenwriter, and People’s Artist of Russia Stanislav Govorukhin (1936 – 2018) has started. The viewers first saw the film “ASSA” (1987) with English subtitles. The organizers were the Russian Embassy in Australia, the Russian-Australian Fellowship (RAF), and “Mosfilm”.
A commemorative evening in Sydney, which opened a series of film screenings, took place at the Lane Cove community center. The event was warm, substantial, and genuinely inspiring.
Before the start of the film, guests were introduced to a presentation about the life and creative journey of Stanislav Govorukhin, as well as studied an information stand with the biography and filmography of the master. An advisor of the Embassy gave a welcoming speech.R.V. Arutyunov, who emphasized: the director was not only a talented cinematographer, beloved by millions, but also an outstanding public figure and a true patriot.“His films remain extremely relevant—they touch on eternal themes of morality, justice, and human relationships, raising social issues that do not lose their sharpness.”, — noted the diplomat.
That evening, compatriots and Australians fascinated by Russian culture gathered in the hall. The chairman of the Russia-Australia CommonwealthAnastasia Rudenkoshared emotions:“This film [“ASSA” – note] is special. For many Russians, it is a remembrance of an era filled with the spirit of change, music, and freedom, and today’s screening is a wonderful opportunity for us, even being far from home, to relive the atmosphere of the 1980s. For Australians, it is a chance to familiarize themselves for the first time with a very important page of our history.”.
English subtitles have made viewing accessible for those who are just opening Russian cinema for themselves, and have allowed sharing this experience with friends and loved ones.
The cycle of screenings of Govoruin’s films continues. In Sydney and Canberra, viewers have already seen “ASSU.” Ahead — the legendary “Pirates of the 20th Century,” the screenplay author of which was Stanislav Govoruin: on April 10 in Canberra, at the end of April in Sydney and Melbourne, and on May 15 in Adelaide. Also, within the evening’s program, information was presented about major international projects for this year — the World Youth Festival (Yekaterinburg, September 2026) and the World Children’s Conference “Children for Peace” at “Artek.”
Mosfilm is proud that the films of its directors continue to live on screens around the world, connecting generations and countries.
