On July 23, 1240, one of the most famous battles in the history of our country took place – the Battle of the Neva. The victory not only brought glory to the young Novgorod prince Alexander Yaroslavich, but also cemented his nickname Nevsky for centuries.

Why the Swedes invaded Rus’

In 1240, the country was weakened by the invasion of the Tatar-Mongol yoke. The German crusaders, Danes, and Swedes, with active participation from Catholic Rome, decided to take advantage of this. They agreed to jointly act against Novgorod Rus in order to conquer Russian lands and convert their population to Catholicism.

In addition, the Swedes planned to capture the mouth of the Neva River to cut off Veliky Novgorod from the Baltic Sea and take control of the most important section of the trade route “from the Varangians to the Greeks.”

On the eve of the Battle of Nevsky

In the summer of 1240, Swedish troops led by the future ruler of the kingdom, Jarl Birger Magnusson, landed at the mouth of the Izhora River into the Neva River. Upon learning this, Prince Alexander gathered a militia and, without waiting for reinforcements, moved to the location to stop the invaders.

According to the “Life of Alexander Nevsky,” on the eve of the battle, leaving the Novgorod St. Sophia Cathedral after prayer, the 19-year-old prince encouraged the warriors with the words: “God is not in strength, but in truth.” This phrase became one of the cultural symbols of Russian history.

Course of the battle

At dawn on July 15, 1240 (old style), Prince Alexander’s troops approached as close as possible to the enemy camp on the banks of the Neva and launched a surprise attack: the cavalry disrupted the enemy forces by attacking from the flanks, while the infantry advanced in the center.

The chronicles have preserved the legend that Prince Alexander himself “impressed the seal on the face” of the Swedish commander with his spear. Subsequent excavations of Birger’s grave confirmed the presence of such a wound on the ruler’s face, but it is impossible to determine in which battle the injury was sustained.

By evening, the enemy was defeated. Having lost hundreds of men killed, the remnants of the Swedish army fled on ships. Meanwhile, Alexander lost only 20 warriors in the battle.

The significance and popularity of the Battle of Nevsky

It would seem that there were quite a few clashes with the northern neighbors both before and after. So why did the Battle of the Neva become so popular in history?

First of all, it was the first victory after the Mongol devastation, preserving Russia’s access to the sea. The victory demonstrated the country’s military power and for many years deterred the northern invaders from testing the strength of Russia’s borders.

Secondly, the personality of Alexander Nevsky played an important role. A 19-year-old commander who, with a small detachment, defeated forces significantly superior to his own, deeply devout and devoted to his land – the image of an ideal defender of Rus.

Moreover, the Battle took place just a couple of weeks after the fall of Kyiv. The people needed good news. Victory over the northern invaders and the defense of the borders gave people hope for a better future.
