The analytical center “Expert” has released ranking of scientific productivity of Russian universities 2026. The ranking has been published since 2018 and is the only one in Russia that positions universities based on indicators of scientific activity. In 2026, the analysis was conducted among 142 Russian universities included in 17 subject rankings and 13 thematic sections (narrow directions within subjects). NSU is represented in 2026 in all rankings and sections, except for “management.” NSU holds the highest positions in “physics” and the “quantum technologies” section — second place among Russian universities. NSU is also in the top 10 in “chemical technologies,” “archaeology,” “biochemistry,” and “medicine.”
Over the year, Novosibirsk State University has made significant progress in several areas: in “pharmacology” (from 22-23rd place to 14-15th), “economics” (from 22nd to 14-15th), “artificial intelligence” (from 21st to 11-15th), “medicine” (from 13-15th to 10th), “computer science” (from 21-19th to 16th), and “cybersecurity” (from 34th to 29-30th). The university’s positions have not changed in “physics” (2nd), “quantum technologies” (2nd), “chemical technologies” (5-6th), “biochemistry” (10-11th), “life sciences” (14-15th place), “automated technologies and robotics” (22-23rd), and “social sciences” (28-29th).
By the end of 2025, the number of publications by NSU scientists in Scopus journals exceeded 1600, and in Web of Science — 1200. The university is also characterized by a significant share of scientific publications in the higher levels of the White List, which are well cited. In 2025, the share of NSU publications in the first two levels of the White List journals was 81%.
The advancement of NSU in the rankings across several scientific fields is connected to the emergence and activities of new departments: for example, since late 2023, the university has operated a Research Center in the field of artificial intelligence, which actively publishes work and collaborates with industry partners to implement developments. In 2025, a large-scale transformation of medical education at NSU began: the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies was established, new educational programs such as “Medical Cybernetics” and “Industrial Pharmacy” were licensed, and biomedicine and biotechnology were identified as priority research areas for the near future.

The source of this growth is income from extrabudgetary sources and interaction with industrial partners. For example, in 2025, the increase in R&D funding amounted to 1.5 billion rubles compared to 2024. It is important to note that while increasing the applied nature of research and the volume of developments at the request of industries and companies, we pay great attention to fundamental, promising research, which allows us to build a foundation for the future. New opportunities for the development of advanced research and technological fields will arise with the opening in 2026 of two buildings of the modern NSU campus — the educational and scientific center of the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies (IMMT) and the research center. These facilities will foster research areas such as biomedical and pharmaceutical technologies; space instrumentation; photonics and sensor technologies; synchrotron technologies; high-performance computing; accelerator mass spectrometry; and paleomagnetic studies.

The ranking uses the Scopus journal classification — All Science Journal Classification (ASJC). The core of the subject structure consists of 17 scientific fields: engineering sciences, computer sciences, mathematics, materials science, earth sciences, ecology, social sciences, chemical technology, chemistry, energy, humanities, life sciences, physics, economics, management, medicine, and pharmacology
For a more detailed analysis of the scientific competencies of universities in specific fields, thematic sections are created. They reflect actively developing areas within a broader subject domain.
The rating calculation is based on three semantic blocks: “Scale” (30%), “Demand” (35%), and “Excellence” (35%). The categories have different weights when calculating the final result. The indicators were calculated for the period 2022–2025.
The “Scale” block characterizes the volume and sustainability of the university’s scientific activity and includes two indicators: the number of publications and the Hirsch index. Each indicator has a weight of 15%. The “Demand” block reflects the scientific impact of publications and includes the average SNIP of journals and the average number of citations per publication, each weighted at 17.5%. The “Excellence” block characterizes the university’s presence in the highest-ranking segment of scientific periodicals and is formed based on the number of Q1 publications and the average citation rate of Q1 articles; the weight of each indicator is also 17.5%.
