Khartoum, July 6 /Xinhua/ — At least 15 people died and one was injured as a result of the collapse of a traditional gold mine near the city of Wadi Halfa in northern Sudan, the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company reported on Monday.
This company, a government agency supervising mining activities, noted in its statement that the accident occurred after miners entered a site that had previously been closed by authorities due to being declared unsafe.
It is reported that rescue teams have been sent to the scene. Civil defense units continue searching for possible victims still trapped under the rubble.
As a Xinhua correspondent reported, one of the local eyewitnesses said the collapse occurred early Sunday morning and was so “massive” that rescuers were unable to reach those trapped under the rubble for some time.
According to an eyewitness, the miners repeatedly ignored warnings that they should not enter the closed mine.
