On July 6, the 15th, jubilee International Multiconference “Bioinformatics of Genome Regulation and Structure / Systems Biology” BGRS/SB-2026 began its work. The conference is organized by the Institute of Cytology and Genetics (ICG) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS), Novosibirsk State University, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS), the Scientific Council on Bioinformatics of SB RAS, and the Vavilov Society of Geneticists and Breeders. This year the event is held at the new campus site of NSU.

The first conference on bioinformatics and systems biology was organized in 1998, with about 200 participants attending. This year, the event gathered around 800 specialists in bioinformatics, as well as students and graduate students from various countries around the world. The conference program will feature approximately 400 presentations and 200 poster reports.

A distinctive feature of BGRS/SB is its multidisciplinary nature. The conference program includes symposia and sessions that address a wide range of problems whose solutions require the integration of theoretical and experimental approaches.

Over the course of a week, several hundred scientists from 35 countries will discuss recent advances in various scientific disciplines—bioinformatics, biomedicine, microbiology, pharmacology, mathematical gerontology, and others. As the participants themselves note, something important and interesting always happens at conferences of this level, with presentations that significantly change the understanding of particular scientific problems and approaches.

In the welcoming speech, the co-chair of the conference, scientific director of the Federal Research Center ICIG SB RAS, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nikolai Kolchanov reminded that the development of genome sequencing technologies (as well as a number of other research methods) has made biology one of the main sources of so-called big data (according to experts’ estimates, today the volume of information generated as a result of genetic research amounts to 40 petabytes annually).

The analysis of large genetic data has led to a transformation of the fundamental paradigm of modern genetics. The central focus has become gene networks — groups of coordinately functioning genes that interact with each other. Research has revealed an immense complexity in the regulation of gene networks, manifested in the fact that the functioning of any single element of a gene network can be controlled by dozens or hundreds of elementary regulatory processes.

Another fundamental feature of living systems revealed through the analysis of large genetic data is the exceptionally high level of genomic variability in populations of humans, animals, plants, and microorganisms.

The response to these challenges posed by Big Genetic Data consists in the development of next-generation information and software systems that integrate classical methods of bioinformatics and systems computational biology with methods of artificial intelligence and deep machine learning, ensuring a multiple increase in the depth, accuracy, and speed of analysis of large genetic data, — emphasized Academician Kolchanov.

The chairman of the Siberian Branch of the SB RAS, Academician of the RAS, addressed the conference participants with a welcoming speech Valentin Parmon.

This conference has long been the leading scientific forum on bioinformatics, attracting scientists from all over the world. It is no coincidence that it originated and takes place here, in Akademgorodok, which is called the scientific capital of our country. The venue for the event has become the new campus of Novosibirsk University — one of Russia’s leading universities, where advanced scientific research is also conducted in the fields of biology, mathematics, and information technology. — he noted.
