Minsk, July 3 /Xinhua/ — In Belarus, the main national holiday — Independence Day — is being celebrated on a grand scale on Friday. Throughout the country, there are flower-laying ceremonies, festive concerts, and sports-patriotic events.
The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, congratulated his compatriots on Independence Day. “The day of the liberation of the Belarusian capital from the Nazi invaders — July 3, 1944 — became a symbol of courage, freedom, and patriotism for our people,” his press service quotes the Belarusian leader as saying.
During the festive day in Minsk, residents and guests of the Belarusian capital took part in a public laying of flowers at the Victory Monument. Flowers and wreaths were also laid at the “Kurgan of Glory” memorial complex, attended by representatives of the Belarusian government, ministries, agencies and youth, veterans of the Great Patriotic War, former prisoners, and home front workers.
July 3, 1944 — the date of the liberation of Minsk from fascist occupation. The decision to celebrate Independence Day specifically on July 3 was made in 1996 following the results of a republican referendum. –0–
