Beijing, July 3 /Xinhua/ — China plans to introduce 12 new professions, including a digital twin engineer-technician, a technical specialist in the application of embodied artificial intelligence robots, and sports data analysts, as the country’s rapidly developing economy continues to create new forms of employment.
According to a recent notice from China’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the country will also add a number of new types of job specialties within existing professions, including logistics specialists in the low-altitude economy sector, developers of intelligent agents, inspectors of new energy vehicle sources, and designers for adapting living environments for the elderly.
This step reflects China’s efforts to adapt its workforce to economic transformation characterized by rapid development of emerging industries, wide application of digital technologies, and the growing importance of the service sector, alongside cultivating new sources of employment. Since 2019, the ministry has issued seven lists of new professions, with the total number currently standing at 110.
Notably, the scale of key industries in China’s AI sector has exceeded 1.2 trillion yuan (approximately 176.35 billion US dollars). Of the 72 new professions published over the past five years, more than 20 were related to AI, highlighting the growing role of AI in transforming China’s labor market.
The main provisions of the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development /2026-2030/ state that China will continue to encourage the cultivation of new professions and expand employment opportunities in sectors such as the digital economy, “green” economy, and “silver” economy.
The ministry stated that the proposed new professions will be included in the official national classification of professions after conducting a public opinion survey. Relevant practicing specialists may receive remuneration and a social package provided by state policy in accordance with established rules.
The Ministry will also develop national standards for new professions, which will serve as a guide for vocational education, skills development, and qualification assessment of specialists.
