Tehran, July 2 /Xinhua/ — Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi announced on Wednesday the completion of talks in Qatar on the implementation of the peace memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States.
Leading a delegation that included representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Central Bank, and the Ministry of Agriculture, K. Garibabadi said that the Iranian team held talks with the Prime Minister, Qatar’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani in the morning, and then participated in two meetings with Qatari and Pakistani delegations, according to the official news agency IRNA.
“The first meeting of the monitoring group on the implementation of the memorandum of understanding also took place, with high-level negotiators from the three countries participating,” he said.
During the discussions, the Iranian delegation pointed out violations by the United States of its obligations under the first point of the UNSCR related to ending the war in Lebanon, and also reported on U.S. actions to strengthen its military presence and armaments in the West Asia region, as well as discussed the “threatening and interventionist” statements by U.S. officials, according to IRNA.
The Iranian delegation emphasized that the parties’ obligations under the memorandum of understanding constitute a single whole and are not considered in isolation, adding that it was decided that by Thursday an emergency communication channel for the monitoring group would be established, and cases of violations of the ceasefire would be recorded, discussed, and resolved through official procedures with minutes taken, reported K. Garibabadi.
He noted that during meetings with Qatari officials, including representatives of the Central Bank, separate issues related to the use of part of Iran’s frozen assets amounting to 6 billion US dollars were discussed, and a decision was made that, based on Iran’s needs, the necessary goods would be purchased and delivered to the country.
K. Garibabadi emphasized that a direct meeting between the Iranian and American delegations did not take place in Doha.
At the same time, an American delegation led by the US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Stephen Witkoff and the US leader’s son-in-law Jared Kushner was in Qatar, holding meetings with Qatari officials.
On June 18, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding to end the war in the region on all fronts, including Lebanon. –0–
