Abuja, July 1 /Xinhua/ — A total of 269 Nigerians evacuated from the Republic of South Africa /RSA/ were flown to the southwestern state of Lagos on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Kimiebi Ebienfa reported that representatives of the Nigerian mission in South Africa accompanied a group of 269 evacuees. Last Wednesday, another 66 Nigerians returned to their homeland on board a South African Airways flight organized by a Nigerian philanthropist.

K. Ebienfa said that the evacuation process is ongoing, and in the coming days even more Nigerians will be screened and allowed to repatriate.

Recently, a wave of anti-immigration protests has swept through South Africa, with organizers citing unemployment, crime, and the burden on the public service system as the main problems.

Some anti-immigration groups have urged undocumented foreigners to leave the country by June 30 and threatened to organize nationwide protests if their demands are not met. –0–
