25-year-old Ma Feilun is from São Paulo, Brazil. He studies traditional national sports at Hubei University and is also a coach for the university’s dragon and lion dance troupe. He is fluent in Chinese, and his movements in the dragon dance are fluid and graceful.
Ma Feilun’s connection with China began in childhood. Influenced by older cousins, he studied martial arts in Brazil and won many awards at competitions. In 2019, thanks to the Confucius Institute exchange program in Brazil, he came to Hubei University to study Chinese. While at university, he became acquainted with the dragon dance and fell in love with it, quickly becoming one of the key members of the troupe performing dragon and lion dances.
Starting from his senior year at university, Ma Failun worked as a coach, gradually adapting to his new role by guiding team members and introducing innovative technical moves. At the 17th National Dragon and Lion Dance Championship, the dragon dance team under his leadership achieved excellent results, securing first place in the women’s team and third place among the men.
Having lived in Wuhan for seven years, Ma Feilun has integrated into local life and is called “Brother Long.” In his free time, he enjoys listening to music, watching TV series, and traveling. With just over a year left until graduation, he hopes to continue working in teaching, popularizing martial arts, or cultural exchange to help more people understand and appreciate the Chinese culture of dragon and lion dances.
