Beijing, June 29 /Xinhua/ — Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a meeting in Beijing on Monday with former President of Senegal Macky Sall, who is a candidate for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations. During the meeting, Wang Yi expressed support for the UN in more effectively utilizing its central and leading role in international affairs.
As noted by M. Sal, it is necessary to gradually and pragmatically advance UN reform, maintaining the authority and effectiveness of the UN Security Council, focusing attention on the international development agenda.
The candidate for the post of UN Secretary-General stated a firm commitment to the One China principle and emphasized his high appreciation for the long-term efforts of the Chinese side aimed at promoting multilateralism and supporting the central role of the UN. M. Saleh declared active support for four major global initiatives, as well as expressed readiness to work jointly with the Chinese side and the international community to strengthen UN cohesion and deepen South-South cooperation.
Wan Yi, in turn, pointed out that the protection, revival, and strengthening of the UN are the common aspirations of a wide range of member states of this global organization.
According to the head of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China will continue to unite more countries, contribute to the United Nations better meeting the needs of the times, and steadily develop and strengthen through reforms. The next UN Secretary-General should actively listen to the voice of a broad range of member states and pay proper attention to the legitimate demands of Global South countries, Wang Yi emphasized.
As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China pays special attention to cooperation with African countries within the United Nations and will participate in the election of the next Secretary-General, guided by a responsible and constructive approach, promised the Chinese diplomat.
