Ouagadougou, June 27 /Xin Hua/ — Burkina Faso on Friday announced a decision to sever diplomatic relations with France. This is stated in a statement published by the office of the prime minister of the African country.

According to the statement, the decision was taken after a “comprehensive assessment of the state of bilateral relations between Burkina Faso and France.” The government stated that “indispensable conditions for the development of relations, based on mutual respect, mutual trust, non-interference in internal affairs, and respect for national sovereignty, no longer exist.”

The statement notes that Burkina Faso has made a “choice in favor of responsibility and sovereignty.” This decision “in no way calls into question the historical, human, cultural, and social ties between the peoples of Burkina Faso and France” and “concerns exclusively the institutional framework of diplomatic relations between the two states,” the document adds.

The government of Burkina Faso has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the protection of foreign nationals on its territory and has called on citizens to show “responsibility, restraint, and civic awareness” towards French citizens and other foreigners residing in the country.

The statement confirms the government’s determination to conduct an independent foreign policy based on diversification of partnerships, strengthening cooperation along the “South-South” line, and developing balanced relations with all countries, as well as promoting peace, security, and sustainable development. –0–
