Beirut, June 27 /Xin Hua/ — Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said on Friday that the framework agreement signed earlier that day in Washington between Lebanon and Israel marked the beginning of the path to restoring Lebanon’s full sovereignty, and promised to continue working until this process is completed.
In the statement published by the administration of the Lebanese president, J. Aoun noted that the agreement is the first step towards the return of Lebanese refugees to their land, emphasizing that Lebanon will no longer tolerate the occupation.
J. Aoun thanked Washington for organizing and financing the negotiations and expressed gratitude to the Arab and friendly countries that supported Lebanon throughout the entire process.
The deal immediately caused a protest from the “Hezbollah” group. A deputy of its parliamentary faction, Hassan Fadlallah, stated on Friday that the group will oppose any attempts to implement the framework agreement and does not intend to disarm, reports the Lebanese news site Elnashra.
H. Fadlalla noted that Iran, a close ally of Hezbollah, made it clear that Tehran will not sign an agreement with Washington regarding the full withdrawal of Israel from Lebanese territory, reports Elnashra.
The state television channel Kan TV News reported that the agreement provides for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from two “pilot zones” in southern Lebanon.
The parties also reached agreements on the issues of the “Hezbollah” tunnels in southern Lebanon and countering the growing influence of the faction, reports Kan TV News.
