Today, the world is witnessing more armed conflicts than in any other period since World War II, and geopolitical tensions, deepening inequality, escalating climate shocks, and rapid technological development without restrictions make the work of preventing conflicts and restoring peace critically important. This was stated on Thursday by UN Secretary-General António Guterres during his speech at the annual session of the Peacebuilding Commission.
The UN Secretary-General reminded that over two decades of its work, the Commission on Peacebuilding and the Peacebuilding Fund have helped dozens of countries emerge from conflicts and strengthen peace institutions.Guterres cited examples from Colombia, where peacebuilding was based on local realities with active participation of women and youth; Sahel, where the Commission facilitated regional cooperation within the framework of the UN Integrated Strategy; Central African Republic, where support was given to organizing the first local elections in thirty years; as well as Liberia, where the Commission helped ensure a smooth transition after the completion of the peacekeeping mission.
“One of the Commission’s greatest strengths is its ability to unite representatives from the spheres of politics, finance, and development,” the Secretary General said. “It is this kind of coordination that allows turning commitments into real local changes. For many people, this means the restoration of services and sources of livelihood, strengthening the justice system, and rebuilding trust.”
The peacebuilding fund, according to the Secretary-General, remains a key instrument of early response, which takes on risks and invests in the world where other institutions cannot or are not ready to do so.

The Secretary-General reminded that last year states unanimously adopted a number of resolutions that define further directions of work. They provide for expanding interaction with civil society and regional organizations, deepening ties with ECOSOC and the General Assembly, strengthening the consultative role of the Commission for the Security Council, enhancing partnerships with international financial institutions and the private sector, as well as supporting countries during the transitional period after the completion of peacekeeping operations.
António Guterres noted that the introduction of mandatory contributions has strengthened the financial sustainability of the Fund; however, voluntary contributions are still necessary for it to operate at the required speed and scale.
“I call upon states to reaffirm their commitment to a future free from violence, as well as to the instruments that make such a world possible,” the Secretary-General said. “Together we can build a lasting peace—everywhere and for everyone.”
