Beijing, June 26 /Xinhua/ — The passenger flow on the Lhasa-Lhünzhub /Nyingchi/ railway, the first electrified railway line in the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China, has exceeded 6.25 million people since it opened five years ago, while the freight turnover on it has not exceeded 2 million tons. This is evidenced by data from the state corporation “China Railway” /CR/.

The length of the railway is 435.48 km, and the design speed of train movement is 160 km per hour. More than 90% of the route passes through areas located at an altitude of more than 3 thousand meters above sea level; at the same time, 75% of the total length of this railway is on bridges and tunnels, and the Yarlung Tsangpo / Yalu Tsangpo / River is crossed 16 times.

The railway was put into operation on June 25, 2021, putting an end to the lack of railway communication in the southeastern part of Sichuan and ensuring the operation of high-speed passenger trains of the ‘Fuxing’ series in the highlands.

Over the past five years, the monthly passenger flow along the entire line has increased from 59 thousand passenger-trips at the time of commissioning to the maximum indicator of 153,800 passenger-trips. Travel time from Lhasa to the cities of Shannan and Linzhi has been reduced to 1 hour 2 minutes and 3 hours 49 minutes, respectively.

The cargo capacity of trains operating on this railway line increased from 902 tons in 2021 to 1,415 tons in 2026. The average daily volume of cargo transportation this year increased by 36.7 times compared to the figures of 2021.

The Lhasa-Linzhi railway has brought significant economic benefits, contributing to the formation of a “three-hour economic circle” that unites cities such as Lhasa and Linzhi, accelerating the movement of human flows, cargo flows, financial and informational flows, as well as promoting the optimization of the regional industrial structure and sustainable economic development.

Over the past five years, the average annual growth rates of GDP in the cities of Linzhi and Shannan remained at levels above 8 and 5.8 percent respectively, which in both cases exceeded the national average.
