The “Interfax” group has published another17th Annual National University Ranking (NRU) 2026. NSU has been in the top 5 rankings for the second year in a row, ahead of Novosibirsk State University only by capital universities such as MSU, HSE, MIPT, and RANEPA. NSU’s success is primarily due to improved positions in the ‘Education’ sub-ranking (NSU rose from 13th place in 2025 to 10th in 2026) and ‘Brand’ (NSU advanced 4 positions—from 13th in 2025 to 9th in 2026).
Within the framework of the NRU-2026 project, an assessment of the activities of 395 universities in Russia was conducted. The ranking includes all statutory universities of the country: 29 national research universities, 10 federal, 33 flagship, as well as 133 universities participating in the “Priority 2030” program. In addition, the activity of 27 non-state universities was evaluated. The “Interfax” ranking is formed from six sub-rankings: “Education” (20%), “Research” (20%), “Social Environment” (15%), “Cooperation” (15%), “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” (15%), and “Brand” (15%).
For the assessment of “Education,” data on the quality of applicants was used (it should be noted that the average USE scores in subjects such as Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Foreign Language, Literature, History, and Mathematics were counted with a 10% bonus), the level of teachers’ qualifications, the presence of contracts for internships, work with schools, and more.One of the significant changes in 2026 is that in the “Education” subrating, data from “SPARK-Interfax” will be applied to assess the “usefulness” of enterprises and organizations with which agreements on organizing internships and targeted training of students are concluded, in order to minimize the formal submission of internship organization to the organization.
NSU is traditionally distinguished by a high level of education, the university provides strong fundamental training while developing new, promising areas. In recent years, advanced educational programs such as “Applied Mathematics and Physics,” “Medical Cybernetics,” “Applied Artificial Intelligence,” and others have appeared. Many programs are developed with the support of industrial partners, including large companies, which allows students from the first years to participate in project implementation aimed at solving industry tasks.
According to the results of the 2025 admissions campaign, the university’s average USE score for budget-funded places under the main competition was 85. In terms of the quality of overall admissions (budget and paid places), NSU ranks among the top 15 Russian universities, according to the HSE rating.

New opportunities for the development of educational programs and cooperation with partners in the development of in-demand technologies and products will open up based on the infrastructure of a modern campus being built within the framework of the national project “Youth and Children.”Already this year, two new buildings will be put into operation — the educational and scientific center of the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies of NGU and a research center, which will be equipped with advanced equipment, where research will be conducted in current areas such as biomedicine, space instrumentation, artificial intelligence, synchrotron neutron research, and others.
