A record number of displaced persons, thousands of deaths on migration routes, and growing humanitarian needs – this was the global migration situation in 2025. Despite reduced funding, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) provided assistance to 17.8 million residents of 170 countries and territories over the year.
The speech is not only about border crossings. According to data from the organization’s annual report, by the end of last year the number of internally displaced persons worldwide reached 82.2 million people. More than 7,900 migrants died along the way.
Emmy Poup, CEO of MOM, described 2025 as a time of “enormous challenges, but also exceptional resilience.” According to her, the organization has focused not only on emergency aid but also on finding practical solutions for people who became homeless and are hosting communities.

One of the most complex operations was work in Sudan, where the ongoing conflict has caused one of the largest displacement crises in the world. IOM became the first UN system institution to resume operations in Khartoum and provided humanitarian assistance to more than 1.1 million people.
Worldwide, during the year, 7.3 million people used IOM programs in the housing sector, and 1.5 million people received services in the area of mental health and psycho-social support. With the organization’s support, more than 4.1 million medical consultations were conducted. Another 5.1 million people gained access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, and 1.5 million received protection services.
Sustainable solutions
The UN agency emphasizes: it is important not only to provide people with basic needs but also to help them return to a normal life. According to the report, more than 16.8 million people received support on the path to a long-term solution to the displacement problem.
The consequences of climate change increasingly force people to leave their homes. IOM has implemented projects to increase resilience to natural disasters for nearly one million people in 34 countries. The organization has also helped governments consider population mobility issues when preparing for and responding to emergencies.
A separate focus is made on safe and legal migration. In 2025, IOM helped almost 625 thousand people gain the opportunity for employment or training.
The organization acknowledges: humanitarian needs are growing faster than the available funding. However, last year’s experience shows that even against the backdrop of a record number of displaced people, international cooperation still allows lives to be saved and opportunities for recovery to be created.
