In 1981, in the village of Yaozyaogou, Yanshan County, Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province, the last 7 wild Crested Ibis in the world were discovered. It was precisely then that the process of saving this endangered species, known as the “Eastern treasure,” began.
For 45 years, local authorities, focusing on the main goal of increasing the population, have conducted dynamic monitoring and wildlife protection, intensified scientific research on the rescue and artificial breeding of ibises, developed an effective path for conservation in the wild and artificial breeding. Throughout the entire habitat of the ibises, a policy was introduced banning the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers to maximally preserve the natural habitat. After decades of continuous efforts, the population of scarlet ibises is steadily increasing, gradually emerging from a critical condition. By 2026, the global population of scarlet ibises exceeded 12 thousand individuals.
