UN, June 21 /Xinhua/ — The UN Security Council on Saturday expressed concern over reports of a significant increase in the military presence of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) around El-Obeid in Sudan, which may indicate a possible ground offensive on the city.
In a statement to the media, UN Security Council members expressed concern over the direct threat of mass atrocities and demanded that the Security Council immediately cease the offensive on El-Obeid. They also expressed deep concern about the ongoing violence throughout Sudan, including reports of escalating violence in the Kordofan state, which threatens further deterioration of an already grave humanitarian situation, and called on the parties to the conflict to immediately cease hostilities.
Security Council members once again emphasized that all parties must protect the civilian population, ensure and facilitate safe and unobstructed humanitarian access, and also provide safe passage for civilians.
They called on all UN member states to refrain from external interference aimed at inciting conflict and instability, to support efforts to establish a lasting peace, to observe their obligations under international law, and to implement the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
UN Security Council members unequivocally confirmed their unwavering commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Sudan, and also once again declared their rejection of the creation of a parallel governing body in the area controlled by the Security Council.
