Moscow, June 19 /Xin Hua/ — A photo exhibition “From the ‘chaser’ to the ‘leader’, dedicated to China’s scientific and technological achievements, was held on Thursday at the Chinese Embassy in Moscow. It featured 25 photographs from the archives of the Xin Hua news agency, which reflect key areas of the country’s scientific and technological progress: space exploration, construction of high-speed railways, the erection of the grand Sanxia hydroelectric station on the Yangtze River, polar research, and the development of renewable energy. A guided tour of the exhibition was organized for guests.

The PRC Ambassador to Russia, Zhang Hanhui, speaking at a ceremonial event, recalled large-scale scientific facilities commissioned in recent years — the Tianyan radio telescope, the Artificial Sun installation, and the high-altitude observatory for cosmic ray research. “A high level of scientific and technical support helps the country develop new production capacities and promote modernization,” he emphasized. According to the ambassador, China has already reached advanced positions in the fields of artificial intelligence, biomedicine, robotics, and quantum technologies.

Speaking about Chinese-Russian cooperation, the diplomat emphasized that joint research can improve the welfare of the peoples. “China and Russia complement each other in the field of scientific and technological innovations — we have a solid foundation and great prospects for cooperation. Together, we can solve global problems and responsibly use scientific and technological achievements for the benefit of our peoples,” he added.

Assistant to the President of Russia for Science and Education Andrey Fursenko drew attention to the fact that one of the key outcomes of the recent meeting of the leaders of the two states was the decision to hold cross-education years in 2026–2027. Russia has prepared 100 events, including joint research projects by leading universities.

“The Russian Scientific Foundation and the State Natural Science Foundation of China have formed one of the largest bilateral scientific cooperation programs. Every second international project of the Russian Scientific Foundation is carried out with the participation of scientists from China. It is precisely through friendship between representatives of the two countries that a tree of cooperation in science and education is growing, which we cultivate together. Interaction between our countries is attractive and beneficial for both sides,” he emphasized.

Visitors to the exhibition shared their impressions of viewing the photo exhibition, often supplementing what they saw with their personal experience of staying in China. Leonid Kovachich, a research fellow at the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia, first visited China about twenty years ago. Even then, the country was seeing the emergence of its first high-speed trains. Since then, he has returned there repeatedly and personally observed how the country has changed. “I was lucky to personally see how China changes for the better each time. I know the areas where there used to be villages, and now they are unrecognizable — skyscrapers have grown there, wonderful streets, and excellent infrastructure.”China, having defended its sovereignty and its development model for many years, has achieved truly colossal successes,” he said.

Alina Steblyanskaya, senior researcher at the Center for the Study of Modern China at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, spent seven years at Harbin Engineering University. Stopping by a photo with a high-speed train, she noticed: “The train ‘Fuxin’ — ‘Renaissance’ — is not just called that. It is the renaissance of technology, the revival of history through technology. These photographs show the connection between history, present and future — a new China is being built, and this future is undoubtedly bright and successful.” According to her, it is precisely the live communication between scientists of the two countries that is the main value of such a meeting.

Alexander Ivanov, professor at the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, collaborates with the Chinese-Russian Mathematical Center at Peking University. He particularly noted the ability of Chinese colleagues to build a connection between fundamental science and practice. “Good cooperation between people is called friendship — it is necessary for this friendship to be at all levels. I think that in the coming years we will get closer and closer,” said the professor confidently.

In China, on May 30, the 10th National Science and Technology Workers Day was celebrated. On this occasion, a solemn reception and the 7th award ceremony of the Ambassador of the Belt and Road Initiative Prize, established in 2020 to support young scientists from two countries, also took place at the country’s embassy in Russia on Thursday.
