The Duanwu Festival is approaching, and the aroma of zongzi fills the air in the city of Huzhou. Journalists who visited the markets of Huzhou found that traditional “zongzi-pillows” from local brands are in enormous demand, while classic flavors still occupy the main share of the market.
On June 15, at the branded “Chu Laoda” store on Xinya Street in Huzhou, the manager Ms. Sui was busy serving a customer from Shanghai, who had come specifically for local zongzi. “He ordered more than 2,000 zongzi at once to take back to Shanghai,” Ms. Sui said with a smile. That day, the store sold more than 3,000 zongzi: some customers bought for themselves, others ordered vacuum-packed to be sent by mail to different cities in China. This store sells the most popular “pillow-shaped zongzi” in Huzhou — stretched into a square shape, resembling a pillow.For salty tsunzu, a filling made of meat or salted egg yolk is used, and for sweet tsunzu — from bean paste, candied dates, or red beans.
