The village of Suicun in the eponymous settlement of She County, Huangshan City District, Anhui Province, is an ancient village with a history of more than a thousand years. Every year on the eve of the Duanwu Festival, parents and elder relatives give children shoes in the shape of a tiger’s head, aromatic pouch pendants, and other gifts — this tradition is passed down here from generation to generation. The tiger-head shaped shoes symbolize wishes for robust health, while the aromatic sachets carry wishes for peace and well-being. These small handmade items carry the warmth and care of the residents of the Huizhou area.
Until now, many residents of the village of Suytsun still sew shoes shaped like tiger heads and aromatic sachets by hand. These “cultural healers,” using a needle and thread, preserve the cultural color of ancient villages in the Huichzhou area, giving more and more people the opportunity to get acquainted with traditional crafts.
