Kazan, June 18 /Sinhua/ — The anniversary Russia — ASEAN summit in Kazan showed that cooperation, not confrontation, is the best path to building peace. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has stood the test of time and built a system of intergovernmental cooperation based on mutual consideration of interests. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.
“The Association of Southeast Asian Nations enjoys authority not only in the Asia-Pacific region, but also in the world as a whole, having withstood the test of time, having built a system of interstate cooperation based on generally recognized norms of international law and mutual consideration of interests,” said V. Putin, speaking at the plenary session of the summit.
The President of Russia emphasized that it is precisely these principles that form the foundation of Russia’s relations with ASEAN. These relations have the character of a strategic partnership, “which under conditions of geopolitical turbulence is an important stabilizing factor in the Asia-Pacific region.”
Summit participants unanimously welcomed the agreements between the USA and Iran, spoke about the multipolar world, national currency settlements, and new trade routes, as well as discussed events in Eurasia as a whole. They welcomed the opportunities for deepening cooperation between ASEAN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, as well as the interaction between ASEAN and the Eurasian Economic Community.
Following the summit, a package of documents was adopted — the Kazan Declaration, the Russia — ASEAN Comprehensive Action Plan, a Joint Statement on Cooperation in the Field of Culture, and a Joint Statement on Cooperation in the Field of Energy. –0–
