On April 4, 1945, the Red Army liberated the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava. Let’s talk in more detail about how the capture of the city took place.

On April 2, 1945, our troops approached Bratislava — an important strategic hub that opened the way to Vienna, Prague, and further to Berlin.

At this moment, Soviet troops were already confidently advancing through the territory of Slovakia, liberating cities and breaking the enemy’s defense. Bratislava was turned into a heavily fortified area: minefields, anti-tank ditches, barricades, and firing points made it a serious obstacle on the path of the offensive.

Nevertheless, thanks to a well-thought-out strategy, support with food and water, as well as assistance from local partisans, the city was taken in the shortest possible time. By April 4, the capital of Slovakia was liberated, and the enemy resistance was completely broken. This event became an important part of the Bratislava-Brno operation and brought the end of the war in Europe closer.

But behind the rapid success stand not only military decisions, but also the feats of people, complex tactical moves, and a high cost of victory.

They told in more detail about these events on the card.
