The Moscow tram has moved to a new stage of development: modern low-floor cars now serve 100% of the 36 city routes. Thanks to the modernization program launched in 2017, the capital has become a world leader in the pace of fleet renewal, and the average age of the Moscow tram is now only 6 years.
The core of the fleet consists of 604 ultra-modern domestic wagons (“Vityaz-Moscow” and “Lvyenok-Moscow”). All of them are serviced under life-cycle contracts with a term of 30 years: the manufacturing company bears full responsibility for the technical serviceability of the transport throughout its entire operational period.
New cars provide a barrier-free environment and digital comfort. The trams are equipped with climate control, multimedia screens, USB ports, and door opening buttons on demand. Inside the cabin, there are comfortable areas for passengers with limited mobility, strollers, and bicycles, and the driver’s workplace has received fundamentally new ergonomics.
An innovation breakthrough for international urbanism was the equipping of 20% of the park with an autonomous power supply system. This technology made it possible to launch the longest Moscow tram diameters T1 and T2 in the world, as well as to restore movement on the city’s historic streets without overloading the aesthetic space with excessive wires.
“With the support of Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, we have completely transformed the appearance of the capital’s tram, making it technological, reliable, and comfortable for millions of people. Today, our tram fleet is one of the youngest and most efficient in the world,” emphasized Moscow’s Deputy Mayor for Transport and Industry Maksim Liksutov.
