Beijing, June 16 /Xinhua/ — China will participate in the election of the next UN Secretary-General in a constructive manner and will jointly with all parties defend this global organization. This was announced on Tuesday by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Van Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, made the appropriate statement in a meeting with the candidate for the post of UN Secretary-General, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary-General, former Vice President of Costa Rica Rebeca Grynspan.
Noting that the UN’s status is irreplaceable, Mr. Greenspan pointed out that organizations must also inevitably keep pace with the times, promoting reform and paying more attention to the world, development, and the future.
Emphasizing her firm commitment to the One China principle, R. Greenspan expressed gratitude for China’s consistent support of multilateralism and the UN Charter, and also stated readiness, together with China and the international community, to strengthen the authority of the United Nations.
Van I also noted that China, being a responsible major power and a permanent member of the UN Security Council, will participate in the election of the next UN Secretary-General in a constructive manner and will jointly with all parties protect, revive, and strengthen this global organization.
