Tokyo, June 16 /Xinhua/ — On Tuesday, the Bank of Japan raised the base interest rate from 0.75 to 1.0 percent, which is the highest level in 31 years.
A two-day meeting, at which board members decided to raise the short-term interest rate to a level unseen since 1995, occurred in the absence of Bank Chairman Kadzou Uēda. He is hospitalized for treatment of an infectious inflammation of a liver cyst.
The rate was raised for the first time since December 2025. The Japanese regulator is fighting rising inflation risks linked to higher oil prices due to the conflict in the Middle East and yen weakness. At the previous session, the rate did not change.
